Recap 2019: A year of extremes in Bags

Fashion Trends in 2019 showcased throwback trends in the best possible way imaginable. The revival of slip dresses, accessories and short shorts gave us a rerun of what the 90s looked like. Style icons have been sporting this trend too. Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna were all seen wearing the hottest old-school styles like mini-backpacks, oversized handbags, etc. Giant oversized bags were no longer only restricted to one brand (read: Jacquemus) or the enormous toes. We saw these oversized handbags in the arms of many models walking for brands like Bottega Veneta, Givenchy, Loewe and more. Small teeny-tiny handbags made a case for themselves as well. The ones with interesting handles stuck around.

So here are a few trends of 2019 that we thought really made an impact:

CLUTCH IT

Enormous tote handbags are here to stay. They made carrying your make-up and several changes of clothes super easy in 2019. The most popular oversize-clutch to come out of the season was definitely Bottega Veneta's 'The Pouch.' Designed to not be held between your claws, but rather, clutched in the nook of your arm. On the SS20 runways, we saw other major designers following suit. Issey Miyake was one such follower. So safe to say that giant, enormous bags aren’t going anywhere!

MAKE IT XL

A trend for all hoarder-loving women! These XL bags are designed perfectly for women who are always on the go. XXL handbags are the go-to solution for these women. Brands like Bottega Veneta and the Celine have some incredibly chic options to choose from. Oversized bags have finally been brought to the forefront. From carrying all clutch bags to larger totes. Even the smallest of handbags seem to be getting bulkier and heftier, showcasing the increase in the size of the traditionally small handbag. Even though clutch handbags have mostly been reserved for the evening, they have evolved into an essential in the day - to a larger bag equipped to hold more than ever.

FOR THE LOVE OF FEATHERS

Why get a dog when your handbag can be your next surrogate pet? Jokes apart, the new fluff-covered babies come in the form of feather bags. Feather had its moment in the limelight in 2019 and many brands took to the fad. Valentino SS19 saw some amazing renditions of feathered bags that were gobbled up by all bag-lovers. And Loew’s SS20 taught us that fluffy accessories will be going strong throughout next year too.

TEENY-TINY BELT BAGS

Gucci, Prada, Ferragamo - all of them hopped on to the belt bag wagon while it was hot. But 2019s bum bags saw something entirely different. It saw the resurgence of sleek, useful, and super tiny bags which were more up-market and chic than the previous versions.

DECORATIVE RINGS

Rings and handles were seen making a mark this year at all runways. Although the ring handle bag has been around for a while, versions of it were seen making rounds in summer straw bags with wooden circular pannels. This season saw these handbags getting more stylized and decorative. If your look is embellished yet subtle, you might want to hop on to this bandwagon.

THE HOBO’S BACK

2019 also saw some functionality being inculcated into the fashion systems. The hobo bag wasn’t seen around since the 90s, but came back with a vengeance this year. The soft hobo has been gaining momentum for a while due to its sheer versatility. No wonder the slouchy shape made a comeback. The spacious bag can fit all your basic necessities, sits comfortably on your shoulder and can literally go with any outfit.
